First Open Allowance call, six horses nominated

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Ten races with 90 horses nominated are to be decided on Saturday, January 15, 2022.

THE QUICK GALLOPER takes an early peek at the entries based on the Overnight which is subject to change when the final program is posted tomorrow (Wednesday, January 12).

1 – Three-time champion jockey Anthony Thomas returns to the saddle for the first time in 2022. Thomas fell from his mount on the last weekend of 2021 and has since been recuperating. On Saturday, he is listed to ride Chitu Prince for trainer Michael Francis; Love Craft for Jason DaCosta; Super Duper for DaCosta, Prince Sanjay for Steven Todd, and Luksol also for DaCosta, making a total of five rides on the day.

2 – The first ‘big’ race for the year is on the program. The St Catherine Cup - an Open Allowance call at six furlongs has attracted six starters; Eagle One, God of Love, Patriarch, Stranger Danger, Awesome Treasure, and Nuclear Noon. Of note is that three of the six starters Eagle One, Patriarch, and Awesome Treasure all won on their last outing.

3 - As is usually the case at this time in a new racing season many eyes are trained on the three-year-olds. On the Saturday card, there are two races for this grouping. The first is a maiden condition event (5 ½ furlongs) in which nine horses are entered. Of note is that in this maiden contest there are no first-timers. The second is a non-winners of two event for local horses and a maiden for foreigners. The foreigners in this race are Lion of Ekati, and Luksol trained by Jason DaCosta; Wowza trained by Anthony Nunes, and first-time starter Talona trained by Philip Feanny.
