THERE might only be five listed starters but for the first time in a while, the three leading horses in the land are down to compete against each other in the same race.
Horse of the Year, Will In Charge, runner-up to the Horse of the Year, She's A Maneater, and Miracle Man Trophy winner Bigdaddykool are all entered in the Legal Light Trophy for Grade One horses over a trip of nine furlongs and 25 yards (1820 metres). This trophy event takes place tomorrow (May 18) at Caymanas Park.
This is a fitting tribute to the great thoroughbred Legal Light ( Element Portia) who is widely regarded as one of, if not, the best horse ever to race in Jamaica.
This year's Legal Light Trophy — despite only five horses competing — is sure to bring out racing fans to the Park to witness a great race in the making.
Here is the analysis.

  1. SUPERLUMINAL - Had his three-race winning streak halted by She's A Maneater on March 23 over 7 1/2 furlongs (1,500m) when finishing in fourth place. With the talented filly present here along with Will In Charge and Bigdaddykool, Superluminal will again find winning a difficult task.
  2. SHE'S A MANEATER - Started the season with a resounding win over 7 1/2 furlongs beating Chace The Great on March 23. She's A Maneater then tackled rivals in the Lady Geeta Trophy over 5 ½ furlongs (1,100m) on April 20 and finished in fourth place behind Another Bullet, Chace The Great and old foe Will In Charge. She was burdened with top weight of 57.0kgs (126 lb) and now getting 2.0kgs (4.4 lb) from Will In Charge could be what the doctor ordered for the filly. She's A Maneater is going to be more at home with the extra real estate of this race and having worked well, she has a glorious chance of taking home this trophy race.
  3. WILL IN CHARGE - Not really a sprinter but Horse of Year Will In Charge made his seasonal debut in the 5 1/2-furlong Lady Geeta Trophy on April 20 and showed that he is still on top of his game even though he finished in third place by 2 1/2 lengths. In that race, again, Will In Charge continued his dominance over She's A Maneater as he came home in front of her over a journey which suited her more. Will In Charge won this race last year, beating She's A Maneater by a length and although giving her weight here could well repeat.
  4. BIGDADDYKOOL - Makes his seasonal debut here. The last time Bigdaddykool raced was on December 26 of last year and he was a winner, beating She's A Maneater by three parts of a length in the Miracle Man Cup over tomorrow's distance. Bigddadykool has been timely prepared for his first run of the season and is expected to run well. Whether or not he is fit to beat Will In Charge and She's A Maneater is left to be seen, but Bigdaddykool packs the class and talent to do so. He is getting 4.0kgs (9 lb) from Will In Charge and 2.0kgs (4.4lb) from She's A Maneater.
  5. HOUDINI'S MAGIC - Houdini's Magic's role in one this is clearly to set a fast pace for his stable companion Bigdaddykool to run at.
