KINGSTON, Jamaica - BRED by Market Rally out of the Legal Process mare Miss Emily, three-year-old bay filly Market Place made a winning debut in Division 2 of a native-bred three-year-old Maiden Condition event over four furlongs on Saturday, July 30, 2022.
Market Place, running from the number one post, was not the best away at the off, racing behind English Anne (Jordan Barrett), Shrewsbury Norm (Omar Walker) and Fearless Fire (Dick Cardenas).
The Gresford Smith trainee was still behind runners as they made their way across the dummy rails for action on the main track. However, with a furlong (200m) to go, jockey Aaron Chatrie produced his mount for an effort on the inside rails and Market Place responded by powering from rivals going away.
Market Place won by 2¾ lengths ahead of Fearless Fire and Shrewsbury Norm in a time of 47.4, with jockey Chatrie despite the one draw keeping a straight course throughout.
“She [Market Place] had been showing good speed in the mornings but she also had her issues, and so we gave her plenty of time to recover and she was able to execute today. She is a first-time runner; the jockey has been on her for quite a while in the mornings and so he knows her best and so I just told him what he needed to do,” said Smith.
He continued: “There’s no real plan for her as yet because we will have to see how she comes out of the race first before we take it from there. But it was a good performance and I am pleased with the win.”
