KINGSTON, Jamaica - Horse racing promoting company Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment (SVREL) has opened entries for the highly anticipated Mouttet Mile Invitational.
The one-mile (1,600m) event, scheduled for December 3, 2022, carries a total purse of US$125,000 (Jamaica dollar approximately $18 million), the largest purse for a single race offered locally and in the Caribbean. The maximum number of 16 starting stalls will be made available for the Mouttet Mile. Twelve starting positions will be reserved for horses (native bred and foreigners) domiciled in Jamaica since January 1, 2022, and four positions for horses not domiciled in Jamaica since January 1, 2022.
The purse will be divided as follows in Jamaican dollars— $10,000,000 (first); $3,250,000 (second); $1,500,000 (third); $900,000 (fourth); $600,000 (fifth); $350,000 (sixth) $150,000 (seventh); $150,000 (eighth); $150,000 (ninth) and $150,000 (tenth).  The breeder of the winning horse will receive $800,000. A commemorative trophy valued at $250,000 will be won outright by the winning owner. The winning breeder, trainer, jockey, and groom will also receive trophies.
“To secure a position in the Mouttet Mile, owners and trainers must provide a letter of intent to the racing secretary no later than September 30, 2022. The past performance of the horse should also be included in that submission. Selections will be made based on the highest earnings (US dollars) since January 1, 2022,” executive chairman of SVREL, Solomon Sharpe said.
Based on performances thus far, the leading lights for the Mouttet Mile are the Ian Parsard pair of Jordon Reign’s and Mahogany, the Jason DaCosta conditioned I Am Fred and King Arthur, Gary’s Subratie’s Derby winner Atomica along with Calculus, and Patrick Lynch’s St Leger victor Blue Vinyl. Hovering close to the aforementioned horses are the likes of Runaway Algo trained by Dale Murphy, I’ve Got Magic, and Excessive Force from the barn of Philip Feanny. The status of the Anthony Nunes trained Horse of the Year, Further and Beyond is uncertain at present, as he is in injury recovery mode and may not make it on time for the Mouttet Mile.
There will be a standard entry fee of J$80,000 for all horses wanting to enter the 1,600-metre invitational event, whether native-bred or imported. The first tranche of $10,000 (non-refundable) is to be paid by November 17 and the balance of $70,000 is to be paid by November 26. The latter amount of $70,000 is refundable only if a horse is scratched by the Jamaica Racing Commission or SVREL veterinarian, or the starter. Entries for the race will officially close on November 28, with the draw for post-positions taking place on the same day. All horses declared to start are subject to a veterinary examination at ‘Scratch Time’ on Tuesday, November 29, 2022. Native-bred refers to horses foaled in Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago while imported refers to horses not foaled in Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago.
In addition, to the Mouttet Mile, a major in-field experience is also planned by the promoting company.
The Mouttet Mile Invitational takes its name from main sponsor Paul Mouttet, chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago-based Zodiac Caribbean Ventures Limited, currently the largest shareholder of SVREL’s mother company, Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL).
