Anthony “St Mary” Thomas reached another major milestone in his riding career on Saturday, November 12, 2022, when he piloted Hijo Primero to victory, for winner number 500.

Thomas became the 20th jockey to record as many as 500 winners in the history of thoroughbred racing at Caymanas Park.

“I am feeling very good about it. That’s a lot of winners, and I am grateful for reaching that milestone. The hard work and dedication I have put into the sport over the years are paying off,” Thomas said.

“I have to thank the trainers, owners, grooms, fellow riders, and everyone who has played a part in my success.

“I’d like to thank everyone, including the punters,” Thomas added.

Thomas, who started his career in late 2015, winning his first race on Rising Power, remembered some of the great moments during his seven-year career.

“You will, of course, have your ups and downs, but you must maintain your focus, both mentally and physically. The best horse that I have ridden in my career so far is She’s A Maneater, and in the Superstakes, which remains the high point in my career,” he said.

Trainer Jason DaCosta, to whose barn Thomas is attached said the rider is very loyal and is one who always gives his best whenever in the saddle.

“I couldn’t be happier. I am elated for Anthony [Thomas], as he is an excellent rider. He has been a loyal rider to my dad and me, and I am very happy for him.

“I hope he will win the next 500 races just as fast as or even faster than this one,” DaCosta said.

Trainer Richard Azan described Thomas as one of the best riders at the park.

“I am so happy to see Thomas reach the milestone of winning 500 races and I hope he will hurry up and win 500 more in a shorter time. To me, he is one of the best jockeys we have here at the racetrack, and I hope that he stays and is free of any injuries, and that he will be an example to all upcoming and existing jockeys because he is an excellent rider, and I congratulate him,” said Azan.

Trainer Ryan Williams said that Thomas is as humble as ever.

“He is a humble young man, and he has done everything around racehorses. He groomed horses, he rode horses, and he went to the sea with horses as well. He is a hard worker. His humbleness is what counts; no matter what you say to him, he is going to listen. He is a very good listener, and he is a guy that you can tell anything to, and he is willing to learn. I hope 500 or more races are there for the future, and I hope he stays healthy and sound,” Williams said.

Trainer Gary Subratie also described Thomas as an excellent jockey.

“Well, he is a hard worker and he is very dedicated. He is an excellent rider and one of the top reinsmen in Jamaica right now. He is very reliable and knows how to ride a race. He has done very well in a short period of time. I think he will go further than that, and I think he will get his 1,000 easily. He is just an excellent rider, and I am very proud of him. Congratulations again,” Subratie said.
