THE QUICK GALLOPER’S – Things to note - 1000 Guineas 2021

KINGSTON, Jamaica – THE QUICK GALLOPER dug deep into the starters with their trainers and jockeys for the 1000 Guineas to find those special facts and moments for readers.  


Trainers Edward Stanberry and Jason DaCosta will be saddling their first runners in a Classic race. Stanberry saddles Sweet Majesty and DaCosta Ianzha Links and Sensational Ending. Stanberry a former jockey joins a long list of riders who have made the change to becoming a trainer. Another former jockey trainer in the field of 14 is Tensang Chung trainer of Secret Identity. 

There are 11 trainers represented in the 1000 Guineas, with three Jason DaCosta, Gary Subratie, and Steven Todd saddling two horses each.  

Of the 14 runners in the 1000 Guineas, Jahsendblessings has the most starts.

The horse with least number of starts is the Robert Pearson trained Alexa’s Dream with three. 

Katalina trained by Gary Crawford is the only bred in utero entry in the 14-horse field. Katalina is by Ride On Curlin – Alienate. Interestingly, both Katalina and Sure Curlin are from the well-established and flourishing Curlin line in the United States. Sure Cure is by Perfect Curlin – Sure To Cure.  

Of the stallions represented in the 1000 Guineas there are three with two runners each.

1 - Deputy Glitters sired Heavenly Glitter (Heavenly Peace) and Amy The Butcher (Asia’s Dream).

2 - Sensational Slam is the sire of Sensational Ending (Pleasant Ending) and Awesome Choice (Lipstick Lily).

3 - Bern Identity is the sire of Secret Identity (Pomeroy’s Secret) and She’s A Wonder (Jamaican Dream). 

Among the 14 jockeys, there are five who are past winners of the 1000 Guineas. They are Dick Cardenas, Dane Nelson, Robert Halledeen, Shane Ellis, and Omar Walker. 

Of the lot of five, Ellis has the most 1000 Guineas winners – four.

Shane Ellis – Ray of Hope (2000), Latonia (2004), Saint Cecelia (2009), and Niphal (2011). 

Omar Walker – Puddy Pooh (2015) and She’s A Maneater (2017).

Dick Cardenas – Selectabook (2013).

Robert Halledeen – Disability Charm (2018)

Dane Nelson – Al Fouzia (2010), Nuclear Affair (2016), and Above and Beyond (2020).
