KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Winston Griffiths Classic, for three-year-olds, non-winners of a Classic race, brought an end to the major races confined to three-year-olds.
Attention will now be fixed on the events designed for the top graded horses, with the None Such, the Gold Cup, the Jamaica Cup, the Mouttet Mile, the Chris Armond Sprint, and the Ian Levy Cup to come.
Of the three-year-olds, Derby and Guineas winner Atomica, St Leger and Guineas winner Blue Vinyl, Jamaica Oaks winner Our Angel, and Winston Griffiths Classic winner Brinks have reached Open Allowance.
From what can be described as a weak three-year-old crop, apart from the Classic winners only Emperorofthecats has won four races to qualify through the various conditions for Overnight Allowance.
Atomica rebounded from defeat in the St Leger to beat the colts in the Derby including her St Leger conqueror Blue Vinyl in the process.
The score after the five Classic races; two wins for Atomica (Derby and 1000 Guineas), Blue Vinyl (2000 Guineas and St Leger), and Our Angel with one in the Jamaica Oaks. While not a true Classic, Brinks winning the Winston Griffiths was also of significance. Note, this was Brinks’ first win as a three-year-old.
While Atomica, Blue Vinyl, Brinks, and Our Angel will go against some of the best around, the rest must go through their conditions in order to race against the better horses in Overnight and above. Leading the way among the rest are the champion two-year-old Golden Wattle with three wins, none as a three-year-old yet, and Perfect Brew, who just recently found himself with wins at non-two and non-three.
What of the rest of the three-year-olds? Truth be told, there are none worth mentioning.
So, what is the future for the 2022, three-year-olds? Atomica will fit in at varying distances, with normal improvement aiding in her further pursuit of excellence. THE QUICK GALLOPER strongly believes that Atomica will be effective from seven furlongs to nine.
For Blue Vinyl, the upper classes will prove difficult for the St Leger winner. He is not blessed with speed, but can race close enough to pack with his best efforts coming with say three furlongs to go in the longer races. Blue Vinyl is not the sprinting sort and is best capable of holding his own at longer trips.
The horse to watch as far as THE QUICK GALLOPER is concerned is Brinks. He is developing late and there is an inner feeling that he will come late in the season and hold his own.
Our Angel will find it rough in the higher grades, probably floating between Overnight and Open Allowance.
Overall, a poor set of three-year-olds.

  1. WELL SAID MY BRO ..A NOT SO GREAT CROP OF THREE YEAR OLDS, BUT IV'E GOT AN IDEA FOR SVL TO PONDER, THE STRATIFICATION OF HORSES ALL OVER THE WORLD IS THE SAME.YOU HAVE THE VERY BOTTOM F&G CLASSES THE MIDDLE C CLASS AND YOU HAVE THE TOP ALBIET A CLASS.
MOST OF THE TIME THE CREAM OF THE CROP WILL GET RACE FANS GOING MILES TO SEE eg: ATOMICA ,JORDON REIGNS AND MAHOGONY,THE UP COMING GOLD CUP MIGHT JUST BE THE RACE TO DO IT.THATS A CLASS.NOW FOR THE HORSES CLASSIFIED AT THE BOTTOM THERES NO SUCH CACHE,BUT IF YOU SPONSOR A LUCRITIVE PURSE AND A CLASSIC DISTANCE OF12 FURLONGS,GETTING THE BEST 16 HORSES FROM THE LOWER RANKS A POOR MANS DERBY SO TO SPEAK,NOT ONLY WOULD IT BRING FANS FROM NEAR AND FAR BUT SMALLER TRAINERS AND OWNERS WOULD BE OVERLY ENTHUSED TO HAVE ASHOT AT $5 MILLION DOLLARS.
