KINGSTON, Jamaica – 11-year-old bay gelding Hover Craft demolished rivals to win the 2021 Mark My Word Trophy, which was the Caymanas Saturday ninth.
The Mark My Word was for horses - three-year-old and upwards - at the grade of Open Allowance going nine furlongs and 25 yards.
With racegoers looking on closely, the starter let them go, and immediately Eroy (Oshane Nugent) took control with Double Crown (Phillip Parchment) and Money Monster (Omar Walker) in contention.
Down the backstretch, the order on the front end did not change, and as is usually the case, Hover Craft (Anthony Thomas) was at the back of the field of seven runners.
Leaving the four-furlong marker Double Crown made a rush to challenge Eroy who withstood the pressure as Oneofakind (Linton Steadman) and Hover Craft moved as a team in pursuit.
Entering the straight for the final two furlongs Eroy by then had dismissed Double Crown as Thomas brought Hover Craft on the outside. The ‘old man’ gathered momentum and flew by Eroy going on to win by 4 ¼ lengths in a time of 1:55.3. Eroy was second and Crimson (Robert Halledeen) third.
Trained by Jason DaCosta, Hover Craft was winning for the 21st occasion from 136 starts. Hover Craft's career earnings now stand at approximately $20, 800,000.
