KINGSTON, Jamaica – The racing industry has lost one of its long-standing professionals, gateman Silbert ‘Gatey’ Scott. Scott who has been a fixture at the starting gates for many years died earlier this week.
An official release from promoting company Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL) said:
“Silbert officially joined the then promoter (Caymanas Track Limited) in May 1993 as a Grade 2 starting gate attendant and was promoted to the Grade 1 level. He continued with SVREL in 2017 as a Grade 1 starting gate attendant. Prior to his official start in 1993, he worked for a short period of time as an attendant under Racing Promotions Limited, in the 1980s. "Gatey", "Scotty" or "Norris" as he was affectionately known to his colleagues and friends, was a highly dedicated person that was blessed with great horsemanship skills. Scotty was highly respected by all Industry stakeholders throughout his career. He was a part of the Starting Gate Schooling Program upon its implementation in 1993 and remained an active member of the program, right up to his untimely passing.
Scotty was always teaching the younger, less experienced team members the correct way to deal with horses. Silbert's pleasant personality brought laughter to everyone he encountered. He was also well known for his culinary skills, which were the highlight of many stable parties at Caymanas Park. He took pride in his work and was dedicated to his family; he will truly be missed.”
QUICKGALLOP.COM offers condolences to Silbert’s family members, colleagues, and friends.
