RACE ONE – Storm Valley duly obliged as the 4-5 favourite for the recently revived trainer Dennis Thwaites and jockey Linton Steadman. Steadman was enjoying his sixth success this year from only 52 rides. Something is awry with the status of Steadman’s career. It is known that he is a more than capable rider with Classic wins to his credit, albeit with a persistent issue regarding his weight. His italent should not go to waste whether that means timely intervention from professionals and, of course, from Steadman himself. First winner on the day for trainer Darby, who has rekindled his form in recent times.
RACE TWO – After two previous runs, the Ryan Darby trained Hopenperseverance obliged with Mario Chong in the saddle. Chong, from the last batch of apprentices, has had a tough initiative in the racing game. For this season, Chong has only ridden 16 times for his two winners. Chong has an issue dealing with his weight thereby curtailing his progress. This young man looks good in the saddle, with an affinity for riding as flat as a penny.
RACE THREE – The hustle and bustle of Phillip Parchment paid off for the connections of Salah including trainer Phillip Elliott. Parchment came from way off the leaders to nip Pakman.
RACE FOUR – The combination of jockey Omar Walker and the 10-year-old former winner of the St Leger, Superluminal have combined to win race after race. For Superluminal now in the claiming ranks, it was his 20th visit to the winners’ enclosure from 73 starts. His earnings have now reached over $16.4 million.
RACE FIVE – Shortly after a light shower of rain it was time for a grey horse to come to the fore in the form of the three-year-old maiden filly, the Ryan Darby-trained Fyffes Pen Liz. This win by Fyffes Pen Liz at odds of 37-1, blew apart the Reggae 6 wager, allowing only 14 winners with each receiving $1,333,183.
RACE 6 – The forward march of leading rider Dane Dawkins continued unabated when he piloted his 69- winner of the season, Dodge This Lodge.
RACE 7 – This was the time for another grey to proceed to the winners’ enclosure. Aphelios landed win number three from 16 starts.
RACE 8 – The She’s A Maneater Trophy was the domain of foreigner Jordon Reign’s. This trophy race will be dealt with in a separate article.
RACE 9 – The day’s nightcap tuned out to be the ‘bomber’. Racing in three-year-old non-winners of two for the first time, the Gary Subratie conditioned, Raddesh Roman-guided Great Trick surged through in the final yards to nip Get A Pepsi and Last Bid, with the latter two dead-heating for second place. Great Trick won at odds of 86-1, making one skilful punter the winner of the Twilight 6. The payout was just over $4 million.
