KINGSTON, Jamaica – The fourth race on Derby Day (Saturday, August 6, 2022) is of some interest as it marks the return from injury of the progressive mare Make Up Artist at the Overnight Allowance level at five furlongs straight.
There are seven horses in this sprint contest as number four Kay Boy is a late non-starter.
The analysis of the event is offered below in draw order.
1 – MAKE UP ARTIST is coming off a break due to injury of 266 days, having last faced the starter on November 13 of 2021, winning with ease going a mile. Her trainer has painstakingly prepared her for this encounter in the mornings with clockers saying that she is about 90 per cent ready. Make Up Artist may need time to assimilate racing again, yet her back class is sufficient for a winning return despite the one draw.
2 – WILL THE CONQUERER was claimed when last the track for $750,000 and now tries Overnight for the first time. This gelding will find it difficult against these more seasoned rivals in this grade.
3 – BASILICUS races in Overnight Allowance company for the first time. This bay mare has done herself proud to get in this grouping. Noted for her speed, Basilicus will have to wait for another opportunity. Note, Basilicus races with the tongue tie and figure 8 on.
4 – KAY BOY now trained by Anthony Nunes is a late non-starter.
5 – ARTESIA has raced once in Overnight, can stay off the pace, and rush rivals in the final furlong. Is in with a chance.
6 – IT’S A BOY is learning in this his new class.
7 – SPARKLE DIAMOND won well on a one million dollar claim on May 23. He was then withdrawn in June with lameness given as the official reason for being a late non-starter. Sparkle Diamond has the ability, with the draw providing him with a clear opportunity of winning.
8 – CAPTUREMYSHIP knows Overnight well and can be considered a specialist coming down the straight. Capturemyship in his last eight starts has raced over the straight seven times. Drawn at the outside with the in-form Dick Cardenas in the saddle, Capturemyship is poised for a winning effort.
