KINGSTON, Jamaica - Victory by Patrick Lynch’s Blue Vinyl in the August 6 BetMakers Technology Group-sponsored Jamaica Derby Classic would be decisive for jockey Raddesh Roman and the young rider is confident that the chestnut colt can get the job done.
Bred by Bern Identity out of the Haynesfield mare Blufield, Blue Vinyl, who won the 2000 Guineas and the Jamaica St Leger Classic races, seeks the ultimate prize in thoroughbred racing the Triple Crown when he mounts up for the Jamaica Derby, the third and final jewel in the Classic series of races.
“It is a wonderful feeling to win Classic races because, before turning into a jockey, it was the dream to become a rider and win Classic races. So winning the 2000 Guineas and the Jamaica St Leger was amazing, but going after the Triple Crown changes everything now.
“This would be huge; it would be massive for me. It would mean so much if I win the Triple Crown. Words alone could not explain what I would be going through.
“It is just hard work and dedication for me now as I can’t get too excited. I just have to keep my focus on the task at hand,” said Roman.
Blue Vinyl has to deal with top filly and arch-rival Atomica once more before he could taste the icing on the cake. But Roman is confident that Blue Vinyl will pass the test.
“Well, I was never worried about Atomica in the St Leger because I knew my horse well. Blue Vinyl is a very talented runner and he wanted the races longer and so I was very confident in our chances of winning the Jamaica St Leger.
“I have confidence coming into the Jamaica Derby because I know that Blue Vinyl will get the trip of 12 furlongs comfortably and he is nice and happy at the moment. He is training well, moving nicely at exercise, but the race has to be run, and I am working hard to put everything in place,” Roman said.
