KINGSTON, Jamaica – The first quarter of racing in the 2023 season is done and dusted.

The statistics in the various championship categories are already producing revealing results.

The popular jockeys’ championship is drawing particular interest among racegoers.

Tevin Foster has grasped the opportunity presented to him in the first quarter to notch 25 wins from 119 rides, that is, a winning percentage of 21.

It is obvious that Foster, who is heavily connected to the barn of three-time champion trainer Anthony Nunes, has found himself in the saddle with quality performances, demonstrating vast improvement, especially in his timing.

Although Foster earns most of his winners from the Nunes barn, in recent times he has been plying his trade on a wider basis. He rode two winners on the last race day (March 25), Scooby for trainer Richard Azan, and Blue Sky at 7-1 for Michael Marlowe.

Foster leads his nearest rival Reyan Lewis by seven wins, as defending champion Dane Dawkins sits in third place with 17 wins. Three-time jockeys’ champion Anthony Thomas, after his pulsating duel with Dawkins in last year’s jockeys’ race, has been somewhat docile this term occupying sixth place with 11 wins from 81 mounts.

The presence of apprentice Ramon Nepare in position number seven has earned nine wins from his 68 rides. This young man, like so many others before him, has gone through the early difficulties of being competitive in an over stacked colony, gradually moving himself to the point where his lightweight, and claiming weight are now being utilized by trainers.

Only three months have passed in 2023, with Foster laying down the championship gauntlet. Only time will tell.

Below is the first quarter list of the top ten jockey’s.
