KINGSTON, Jamaica - The Monday Morning Trophy named after the former Triple Crown champion is tomorrow’s feature race at Caymanas Park.
This is an event for three-year-olds non-winners of two and maiden imported horses with the trip being seven furlongs (1,400m).
Of the lot of eight starters most interest in the betting should boil down to Sentient, Sweet Like Sugar and Don Almighty.
Sentient was fourth went last at the races, behind the formidable trio of Toona Ciliata, Father Patrick and Earn Your Stripes. The only difficulty for Sentient might be the distance of seven furlongs but at this stage, three-year olds are developing rapidly and as such the issue of distance might not be a factor. Sentient is a good sort and can pull it off in the Monday Morning.
Sweet Like Sugar won last time out in what was her second outing on February 16 beating Soul Cure and Dora Lee. Sweet Like Sugar has had 42 days of rest and should be fighting fit for this one plus now she races with the blinkers on. Sweet Like Sugar is going to run well.
Don Almighty is back to the races in a rush after winning on debut just seven days ago over six furlongs. Don Almighty in that first start gave the distinct impression that he is going to be at home going longer with the seven furlongs of this trophy race the right journey for him at this stage.
Don Almighty like in first start is not racing against much here and does have a glorious chance of making it two from two and based on how he performs tomorrow, trainer Nunes will know if Don Almighty is fit and proper for the 2000 Guineas on April 14.
Of the others, Seadon, Summer Sun, Princess Annie, Roy Rogers and Sparkle Diamond, only the latter should provide any test, if any, for the already mentioned top three of Don Almighty, Sentient and Sweet Like Sugar.
