Distant Storm, a three-year-old dark bay Storm Craft colt develop a steady gale that took him into the winner’s enclosure for his first official visit on Saturday last.
Storm Born got rid of the maiden tag in a maiden special weight for three-year-old competed for over 5 ½ furlongs (1,100m).
Part-owner and trainer in her own right Margaret Parchment, representing her trainer-son Wayne, in the winner’s enclosure gave a reaction to the colt’s first winning effort.
Mrs Parchment said: “It is always pleasing to win a race and hold on to it. However, at the moment the colt is just showing that he is a sprinter. So, we do not know how far he will go in his career but thankfully he has shown that he has a little ability. For the moment, therefore, we just have to see that he stays sound. We will just have to do our part in that direction to ensure that he maintains good health but, good-luck plays an important part in enabling you to succeed in achieving that objective.”
Responding to the choice of jockey Oneil Scott to partner Distant Storm, Mrs Parchment was candid in her reply.
“Well when you reach a certain stage you have to go for the better jockeys. You try and to be loyal to your stable guys and your apprentices but there reaches a time and level where you have to call for something better. If that means that you have to carry more weight, so be it. But the experience of the better jockeys is necessary to achieve your objective,” Parchment brought into sharp focus.
In posting his maiden win, Distant Storm completed 1,100 metres in a tidy time of 1:07.3 after decent fractions of 23.1, 47.1. to finish ahead of the 5-1 chance Inspired Miracle ridden by visiting rider Simon Husbands by 1 1/2 lengths with the 4-1 shot Nuclear Evita under Dane Dawkins finishing another 3 ½ lengths behind.
