KINGSTON, Jamaica – Daddy Jones secured his second win while making a strong statement going into the 10-furlong St Leger scheduled for July 3 in the Caymanas Monday eighth.

Daddy Jones with Bebeto Harvey in the saddle for trainer Richard Azan won a three-year-old (non-winners of two) offering travelling nine furlongs and 25 yards. This race honoured former Derby winner in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago Mr Lover Lover.

When the starter let them go, it was Avenging Angel (Ricardo Duhaney) who set the early splits followed on the backstretch by Sweet Majesty (Chris Mamdeen) with Daddy Jones held-up in mid-pack by Harvey.

Awesome Liz (Reyan Lewis), the 6-5 favourite after coming out slowly out and racing wide in the first turn then shot through to take up the running and set sail for home. Daddy Jones at this stage while making up ground was still a way off the leader.

Sweet Majesty and Awesome Liz brought the filed into the homestretch with the former gaining the advantage a furlong out. Then it was Santorini who took over as Sweet Majesty and Awesome Liz faded.

As soon as Santorini (Dick Cardenas) went to the lead, Daddy Jones benefitting from a clear run on the rails came storming through to win in convincing fashion.

Santorini was second and Sweet Majesty third.

  1. Kudos to jockey Bebeto Harvey's never-say-die riding attitude. This is something that's been missing from a majority of our jockeys - they stop riding out their mounts long before getting to the wire. I would think that the owners would prefer, if not getting the major part of the purse money, the money for some bags of feed rather than purchasing bails of grass. Check-out the 3rd race photo finish: - Who looks to be riding out?; Who looks to looks to be giving up?

Anyway, Santorini would have won if he had not began to idle after passing Sweet Majesty. He picked up the bit again, after Daddy Jones went by, and was running on. The 'shadow-roll' or the 'cheek-pieces' could make the difference next time.
