KINGSTON, Jamaica – Sentient after many tries finally got the better of arch rival Toona Ciliata albeit benefiting from a 16 lb weight advantage to win the 7-furlong Chairman’s Trophy for owner The Success Farms, trainer Gary Subratie and jockey Anthony Thomas.

In a race which champion trainer Anthony Nunes saddled five of the seven starters it was surprising to see Supreme Soul (Oshane Soul) being pushed on to lead over Universal Boss with Sentient almost glued to Toona Ciliata (Dane Nelson) behind the leading pack. Prince Charles had by this time gotten rid of his rider O’Brien White.

Things remained the same with Sentient getting closer to the pace setters. Thomas then decided to take the inside run as they straightened up for the last two furlongs. It was obvious by then that Toona Ciliata was not himself possibly feeling the effects of the burdensome heavy impost of 129 lb.

In the straight, Thomas got Sentient to produce a rasping finale to get the better of Supreme Soul with Action Run (Tevin Foster) earning the third slot.

This was the second winner on the day thus far for Thomas and with that victory he is now one ahead of Nelson in the race for championship honours.
