KINGSTON, Jamaica – Showing true pluck and determination, champion two-year-old of last year Further And Beyond, racing for the first time as a three-year-old, was just able to hold off the final burst of Billy Whizz in a pulsating finish to the Prince Consort Stakes which was the Caymanas Thursday seventh. The Prince Consort is confined to three-year-old colts and geldings and is run over seven furlongs.
Ridden by Dane Nelson for champion trainer Anthony Nunes, Further And Beyond with no real speedsters among the starters was pushed to the front with Billy Whizz (Anthony Thomas) by his side.
The two left the rest of the pack as their head on confrontation continued with Further And Beyond on the inside and Billy Whizz on the outside.
They entered the final two furlongs for the stretch drive almost locked together but Further And Beyond started to go slightly away only to find a fighting Billy Whizz not giving an inch.
The final burst by Billy Whizz failed by just a short head, with Calculus (Linton Steadman) finishing third.
The winning time was 1:26.0, the same time recorded by Oneofakind yesterday.
