KINGSTON, Jamaica – It was Dick Cardenas at his best as with sheer timing and superb judgment he was able to score a big win aboard the Gary Subratie trained Duke in the SVREL 4th Anniversary Trophy race.

Cardenas was not the best away on Duke but instead of rushing after the expected leader Patriarch (Youville Pinnock) who blazed splits of 22.2 x 45.3, Cardenas started to move smoothly down the order on the outside.

Patriarch led comfortably ahead of Trevor’s Choice (Shane Ellis) and God of Love (Dane Nelson).

In the straight it was still Patriarch on the lead and by then Duke, a five-year-old bay horse by Casual Trick – Lady MacBeth was in full flight under skilful handling by Cardenas.

With half a furlong to go Duke swept by Patriarch going on to win by 1 ¼ lengths. Trevor’s Choice was third.
