#100th JAMAICA DERBY: No apprentice rides in Derby plus other facts and figures

KINGSTON, Jamaica – As is usually the case, the big jockeys dominate in the major races.

Of the 11 starters nominated for the 100th Jamaica Derby scheduled to be run at Caymanas Park on Saturday, October 31, 2020, none of the current crop of apprentices have been able to secure a mount.

OTHER 2020 DERBY FACTS AND FIGURES

1 – There are two fillies in the 2020 Derby, Another Affair and Shepanza.

2 – Stallion Casual Trick has the most of runners, three, in this year’s Derby. Casual Trick is the sire of Money Monster, Nipster and Wow Wow.

3 – Of the jockeys riding in the 100th Jamaica Derby three have won this race before. They are Shane Ellis, Omar Walker and Dick Cardenas.

 4 – Panamanian Dick Cardenas who rides Shepanza in the Derby is the only foreigner in the line-up.

5 – Of the trainers saddling horses in the Derby, Gary Subratie has the most runners – three, Wow Wow, Nipster and Another Affair.

6 – Of the seven trainers with horses in this year’s Derby, three have saddled winners before. They are Richard Azan, Anthony Nunes and Wayne DaCosta.

7 – Trainer of Green Gold Rush – Junior Small – saddles his first Derby runner.

8 – Trainer of Derby entrant Money Monster, Fitzroy Glispie holds the unique distinction of riding three Derby winners. Glispie won the big race in 1977 atop the great Legal Light, Zell in 1978  and in 1980 aboard Black Knight.
